Thurles Golf Club was founded in 1909 and has been affiliated with the Golfing Union since then. The club has a rich history, having moved locations several times before settling at its current location in Turtulla, Thurles, County Tipperary. The club initially started at Dovea, then moved to Leugh and Loughtagalla before finally purchasing the Turtulla House and 218 acres in 1944. The club acquired the Turtulla House and surrounding 218 acres in 1944 for £6,100. Part of the land was later sold to the Pallottine Order to recoup some of the costs.
The course at Thurles Golf Club was designed by J. McAllister in the mid-20th century. His design has stood the test of time and was well-regarded. In 1999 they asked for redesign plans from Peter McEvoy which were rejected but the desire for change to the front nine and the incorporation of the Island Field couldn’t be resisted and five years later Mel Flanagan and European Golf Services were contracted to carry out the work.
Thurles Golf Club boasts a parkland course that is known for its challenging layout from the back tees. Thurles Golf Club is a private members’ club. The club will host the 2025 Munster Mid-Amateur Open Championship and has been the venue for Irish Boys and Girls and Senior amateur championships.
