Castlebar Golf Club 1910-1985History of the club since its inception 75th Anniversary

Castlebar Golf Club was founded in 1894 following a meeting in the Imperial Hotel and initially the course was at Flanelly’s of Moneen before moving to its current location in Rocklands in 1911. The Connaught Rangers who had enlisted soldiers from Scotland was the likely impetus for the idea.
Improvements continued in the thirties and farmland purchased in the fifties which had Paddy Skerritt, the resident professional, designing the holes to accommodate it. It was in the early eighties that the decision to move to 18 holes was made to alleviate the overcrowding and additional land purchased with Skerritt stepping in again to sketch out the new holes which were in operation by 1985. The course was redesigned by Peter McEoy and Craig Cooke in 2004 with further upgrades carried out by Jeff Howes in 2020.
Castlebar Golf Club has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments, including the Irish Boys Amateur Close Championship in 2004, which was won by a young Rory McIlroy. The course’s strategic design, featuring undulating fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and water hazards, demands precision and accuracy from golfers of all abilities.
