Clonmel Golf Club Centenary Year 1911-2011

Clonmel Golf Club was founded in 1911 and is privately owned and operated by its members. The club was established in the verdant valley, cutting its way into the foothills of the Comeragh Mountains. The founder members included the Earl of Donoughmore, the Duchess of St. Albans, and Villiers Morton-Jackson of Powerstown Park. The club’s first professional and groundsman was a man named Marsh, who lived in the original Pavilion built in 1912.

The club relied on the presence of the military for it to thrive but after the war of independence the club began to suffer with membership and vandalism of the course itself and had to let go of its professional at the time, John Murray, formerly of the Stillorgan Golf Club. The course was extended to 18 holes in 1973 and designed by the renowned course architect Eddie Hackett, known for his work on many of Ireland’s finest golf courses.
