Enniscorthy Golf Club 1907-2007

Enniscorthy Golf Club was founded in 1907. The club has a rich history dating back to its uncertain beginnings. Initially, the course was laid out in the grounds of St. John’s Manor but the land was only suitable for golf between December and April . The club moved to its current location six years later, with W.C. Pickeman from Portmarnock setting out a 9-hole course. This course was located at Bloomfield on 44 acres of the old Farmar Estate and was leased until purchase was finally executed in 1970. In the mid-thirties Mr Murphy was asked to advise on course improvements and Mr Tom Simpson who was in, ultimately failed, talks about designing Tramore was asked to advise on bunkering layout.

The purchase of this land was completed in 1970, and the first part of a two-part program to improve the course began that year. Additional land was acquired in 1983 and it allowed Eddie Hackett to expand the layout to eighteen holes and most of the work was carried out by the members and it involved the planting of 1,500 trees. Additionally land was being purchased throughout the nineties to alleviated the cramped playing conditions and Hackett again would be brought in the advice. Pat Ruddy oversaw further improvements during the 1990s, and Jeff Howes made additional modifications in 2007.

The course features back-to-back par fives at the 4th and 5th, and again at the 10th and 11th. Highlight holes include the left doglegging 8th and right doglegging 17th. The club is owned and operated by its members, with a dedicated committee overseeing its management. The club has hosted the Leinster Boys Open Championship on three occasions (2000,2012,2021). Notable players include Jason Rackard, Sean Cooper and Graham Donohoe.
