Kilkenny Golf Club Centenary Year 1896-1996

Kilkenny Golf Club, nestled in the heart of Ireland’s medieval city, is one of the oldest golf clubs in the country. Founded in 1891, the club has a rich history and a strong tradition of producing talented golfers. The origin of the club has much to do with the benevolence of Mr. Edmond Smithwick J.P., of brewing fame, who provided the original site for the course.

The club has had many homes including Thomastown, Kilcreene (1908) (Winter), Newtown (1922) until it finally settled  in its current location at Glendine. Jeff Howes completed a re-design for Kilkenny GC utilising newly acquired lands because parts of the lands owned by the club were being affected by the introduction of a new bye-pass of the town.

The course is known for its demanding par-3s and risk-reward holes. The 18th hole, a par-4 finishing hole, is often considered the signature hole, requiring a precise tee shot and a well-, executed approach to the green.

Notable players from the Kilkenny Golf Club include Mark Power, Paraic O’Rourke, Gary Murphy, Joe Lyons, J.D. Lyons and Eileen Rose Power.
