How Golf brought Jimmy and Bernie Kinsella together.

The “Links of Love” by Dermot Gilleece tells the poignant story of Jimmy Kinsella, a tournament professional golfer and part of the golfing dynasty that was the Kinsella family.  Jimmy’s greatest claim to fame was his victory in the Madrid Open in 1972 at , it was only the second event in the newly-formed ETPD (European Tournament Players Division).  Jimmy  was twice winner of the Irish PGA Championship and had won the Carroll’s No. 1 Tournament at Ballybunion in 1967 after a course record 65 in the second round. Other notable results were his third place finish in the Irish Open Championship in 1977 and ten years later he captured the Irish Seniors Open at Waterville.

It delves into Jimmy’s profound grief following Bernie’s death on 2 August 2021, revealing his daily struggle with loss and loneliness. Despite attempts to cope, including counselling, Jimmy’s pain is palpable, often manifesting in physical symptoms mistaken for illness but rooted in heartbreak.

In a touching anecdote, Jimmy celebrates Bernie’s 91st birthday during the Covid-19 lockdown with a small family gathering, followed by a memorable motorcycle ride, showcasing their adventurous spirit and Bernie’s willingness to embrace life’s joys despite her age.
