Stillorgan Park Golf Club : A brief History, 1908-1917

Stillorgan Park Golf Club was founded in 1909 by William J. Shannon, the president of the Incorporated Law Society. At the beginning it was 9-holes (“Front Links” at Obelisk Park) but extended to 18-holes (addition of “Back Links” now No.s 2-34 Stillorgan Grove) the following year. The residences at 44/46 Stillorgan Grove is where the clubhouse was. The membership was exclusivelt for professional and civil service classes.

The original design of the course was attributed to John Murray, who served as the club’s professional in its early years but who was replaced by William Holley. The club became uneconomic when a rival person Major W. H. Bailey was trying to attract the members to the Castle Golf Club. Once closed the surrounding clubs (Foxrock, Killiney, Dun Laoghaire and Milltown) benefitted from an influx of members.
