The Eighty-Eighth South of Ireland Open Amateur Golf Championship

€15.00

Darren Clarke beat Padraig Harrington by 1 hole in a thrilling semi-final encounter which could have gone either way and Jim Carvill beat Paul McGinley by 2&1. Clarke’s victory by 4&3 in the final meant he had now had the North, South and Irish Close in the same year. From the quarterfinals there was a veritable who’s who (Burns, Raymond, Carvill, J., Clarke, Darren, Corridan, T., Goulding, N., Harrington, Padraig, McGinley, Paul) in Irish Amateur golf with only John Adams (USA) the odd man out. All four semi-finalists would eventually turn professional but only Carvill never gained full playing privileges while the exploits of the others are well documented.
