The evolution is summarised in the Introduction from the original nine-hole lay out and then moves to the Old Tom Morris eighteen-hole layout which quickly followed then the clubhouse and hotel and afterwards the George Combe alterations through to Harry Colt’s routing changes onto the long gap to Donald Steel’s new sixteenth and changes to the last two holes. All this is done in incredible detail using old mapping and pictures side-by-side with the current layout and biographies of the cast of characters who through in their tuppence in the design of one of the truly great links golf courses in the world.
