Tipperary Golf Club 1896-1996

Tipperary Golf Club was founded on January 25, 1896 although golf was likely played in Tipperary prior to that as part of the recreation of regiments that had been stationed there. Originally located just outside Tipperary Town in the Tipperary Hills (winter course), the club moved to Scallagheen, Corrogue (1935), then Garnacanty (1925), before finally settling in its present location, Rathanny, in 1939. The club has grown significantly since its inception, with the course being extended to 18 holes in 1994 after a discussion to relocate to Ballykisteen was not desirable. It had purchased additional parcels of land totally 36.5 acres which together with an undeveloped 17.5 acres. Richard Stillwell, in conjunction with John O’Leary, came up with the new nine-hole layout.
The inaugural year of Tipperary Golf Club was 1896, with the first President being Lt. Gen. Dunham-Massy and the Captain being T. E. Willington. The club started with 60 members.
Although Braid was considered the cost was prohibitive and John Burke did proffer advice the course at Rathanny was designed by the members most notable William Heffernan and Paddy Leahy. The course has been continually upgraded and maintained to provide a challenging yet enjoyable experience for golfers of all levels.
Tipperary Golf Club is known for its challenging layout. The course is set in the shadows of the Galtee Mountains and features hilly terrain and natural hazards, making it a test for golfers. The course boasts several signature holes, including the 17th Fairway, which is particularly scenic and challenging.
Notable players from the club included Thomas F. Ryan, Arthur Pierse and Pat Murray and the club hosted the 2024 Irish Men’s Mid-Amateur Open Championship.
